- Calculative Type
Questions of a calculative nature provide a means of creating individualized numerical questions using wildcards instead of set values.
- Descriptive Type
These are not real exam questions. They are a case of (possibly) a tutor printing some texts with, perhaps, graphics. However, no answer is required. For example, these information sheets are sometimes used as a way of providing advice or instructions about an upcoming exam or set of questions.

Here, the student is given a question, which may have an image included, and their task is to answer using one word or one phrase. It is possible there will be several right answers to suit a variety of grades. The answers may be case sensitive or may not.
- Number-based (Numerical) Questions
A question requiring a numerical answer can look very similar to questions requiring short answers from the viewpoint of the student. The key difference is that there is a margin of error in numerical-style questions. This provides scope for the setting of a continual range of possible answers.
- Questions with True or False Answers
The respondent chooses either ‘True’ or ‘False’ in answer to a given question, which may have an image included.
- Questions of the Third-Party Variety
As well as standard-type questions, these types are part of Moodle’s core offering. These are often plugin-type questions contributed by members of the community.

The remote questions protocol was an attempt to replicate the Opaque system. This was a third party type of question.
- Regular Expression (RegExp) Short Answer
The regular expression short answer (RegExp Short Answer) was similar to questions of the short answer type where students were expected to provide one-word or one-phrase (i.e. short answers) in response to “open” questions. However, the system for analyzing answers to regular expression questions is more powerful. Therefore, the feedback provided by a tutor can be more adapted.
